October 1907 ~ Trip 1


Friday, October 25, 1907

Went down town to get money and see about tickets for Mexico. Will Brier helped. Had lunch with Mrs. Bogardus, Jessie’s friend, at Hollywood. Went to hear “Sousa’s Band” in the afternoon. WWR help for Grand Canyon and Mexico City.


Saturday, October 26, 1907

Left Los Angeles at 10am. Santa Fe route for Grand Canyon. Slept most of the day. Fine orange, lemon and olive orchards through San Bernardino County.


Sunday, October 27, 1907

Arrived at Canyon about 8:30. Had breakfast, walked down to Bright Angel’s Hotel. Did not like rooms, so came back. El Tovar took room 67, 2nd floor. Went to Hopi house and saw curios. Bought 2 bracelets, 2 spoons and a hatpin. Saw Indian dances there in the evening. Took drive to Roove’s Point to see ___. Fine views. Wrote postals to everybody, and letters to May and Mrs. Bird.


Monday, October 28, 1907

Sunrise from my window. With Josephine, hired a special guide and went down Bright-Angels Trail. Stopped at camp on plateau and Josie went on towards the river. Walked across the plateau to the brim. Fine view. Got back about 6pm. Mr. and Mrs. George Gregory here at dinner. Went to bed early. Tired and lame.


Tuesday, October 29, 1907

Hardly able to walk. I went down to toll house for pictures taken on trail. Packed trunk and wrote to Maude Owens, May, WHS and Will Austin. Left Grand Canyon for Albuquerque 4pm.


Wednesday, October 30, 1907

Left Williams about 5am. At Winslow, changed from car Universal, to Ben More. Indians with pottery. I bought two small bowls. Yellow foliaged trees along streams. Albuquerque 5:30pm. Dinner at the Alvarado. Bought Moccasins and bracelet at curio store. Went into Pullman Tamarack about 10pm for El Paso. Train left about 2am.


Clara then traveled on to Mexico.


 

June 1908 ~ Trip 2

Friday, June 5, 1908

Packed Trunk. Mr. Curry, wife and Ormebys picnicked in deer park. Went to Huxley’s with Henry to sign power of attorney papers. Wrote to Bertha L and Rose Brier.


Saturday, June 6, 1908

Finished packing and made up all the beds. May H here, gave her carpet, etc. Grace Hawley here. Henry and Will went to Dry Creek to H.S. picnic. 4:15 train for Oakland en route to Grand Canyon. Met Nellie (Dind), K.R. in train from Oakland, 10am. Car Corcoran, 9 & 10.


Sunday, June 7, 1908

Tehachapi 11am. Sent postals to Mother and May P. Changed to Pullman Obispo at Barstow. 1 hour wait. Hot ride over desert. Cool pm.

Monday, June 8, 1908

Williams 5am. Set watch ahead 1 hour. Sand and sagebrush on plateau. S.F. Mountains South Canyon 8:45am. Car El Tovar, 54 & 55. Went to Indian Houses, bought centerpiece. Wrote postals. Henry walked to O’Neil and Rowe’s points.


Tuesday, June 9, 1908

Henry went down trail with party. Saw them reach Plateau camp 10:30am. Talked with Scotchman from SF and Bass of Bass Camp. Wrote postals. Went to Hopi house. Henry back at 5pm. Left 8:30pm. Car Los Gatos.


Wednesday, June 10, 1908

Left Williams 5:30 am. Flagstaff 7 am. SF Mountains, North. At Winslow changed to car Ben Volick. Hot and Dusty. Indians with pottery. Albuquerque 6pm. Dinner at the Alvarado. Car Imeritain for El Paso 11pm.
